A prosperous San Francisco hardware merchant for most of the 20th century, Stephen Mariani and his family spent summers on the Mariani Ranch, now the Portola Valley subdivision called Blue Oaks. ==I Portola Valley Archives.==

The Marianis ran a hardwood store near 29th and Mission Street in San Francisco up to WW2. It had wooden floors and you could buy anything from a nut and bolt, to a belt for your Singer Sewing machine or a Model A Ford. If you had a cow, you could get a bale of hay.
