Wow. $480,000 for one deputy and one car. Is that 3 shifts of 8 hours each? What is the salary of a deputy? The cost of a car might be $30-35,000. That would make it $150,000 per shift per deputy.

The numbers are inexact, including numbers used in this Almanac story, but in a phone interview, Lt. Larry Schumaker of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office itemized the annual cost of two extra deputies (two for each full week's daytime shift) at around $450,000 for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
(These are round numbers and are per deputy.)
Salary: $103,000
Benefits: $73,000
Workman's Comp. insurance: $10,600
Replacement when absent: $9,300
Uniforms and related expenses: $8,000
Total: $407,800
Squad car (The deputies use one car):
