They were from the Air National Guard Search and Rescue unit based at Moffat. Given the low cloud cover they were proceeding under visual flight rules (VFR) below the cloud base.

When I saw them they appeared to simply being in transit through the area rather than in any search pattern. Typically they respond to a site specific incident on the ground or to an area at sea.

seemed to be an Osprey (tilt rotor heli) today in West Menlo doing some kind of maneuvers - it was definitely doing more than just passing through

We have a visitor coming to town in the next week. Every time POTUS comes through, it seems there's a practice run a few days before - loud, and usually a lead followed by a second group. I didn't hear/see 2 separate groups, so maybe something else.
Just a guess.
They ran down the length of whole north peninsula, gain, that's similar to the practice runs.

Snagged some pictures and video as they came over. There were two flying over and the second one appears to me marine one...presidents helicopter. He was being escorted by an attack chopper. My guess this was just a dry run for his visit to stanford Friday.
