So let's all get very prepared for the 8.0 quake that is coming our way at some point! 8.0 is very, very powerful indeed. Our thanks to Sheldon Breiner for the expert comparison on the quake/tsunami in Japan and our local geology.

Good description of the fact that water doesn't support shear motion. Not sure that we can guarantee no 9+ earthquakes here.

Short answer: Yes, it can. Pray it's not anytime soon, though.
Especially since a certain group wants to cut the budget of NOAA by 30%.
NOAA runs the tsunami warning center. That's too much big government, apparently.
