Why is it that only the "transit police" are mentioned as investigating this crime? Didn't it happen in Redwood City? Don't the Redwood City PD and the SMC Sheriff have better and more experienced violent crime investigators? And don't they have much better sources and leads within the local community?
As I recall the transit police are the ones who give you a ticket for sneaking across the tracks or not having your CalTrain ticket on your person.

I could see this coming a mile away. Since December, I have been harassed a couple of times by some hoods at the Redwood City station. Each week, the crowds of unsavory characters hanging out there seemed to be getting bigger. I NEVER saw any police presence there whatsoever. No surprise to me that it turned into a free-for-all there.

In this case the "transit police" = San Mateo County Sheriffs Office. Lets help them solve this.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family.
