As an elected Director of the District for the past 8 years, I have fought the misguided efforts of fellow boardmembers to use tax dollars originally intended for support of Sequoia Hospital for unauthorized purposes. In this instance, for a backdoor bailout of schools.
The Chamber should bestow its awards, not on pseudo-philanthropists but upon truly worthy non-government organizations with community commitment, such as that exhibited by Kaiser in Oakland. Weeks after losing a close parcel tax election, the Oakland school district got a $7.5 million donation from Kaiser Permanente.
I urge Mr. Buckmaster and the Chamber to rescind its award.
Taxpayers should take note of the Districts expenditures on this event, and see which Directors take advantage of the $95/plate dinner! E-mail boardmembers to let them know how you feel.
