FACTOID: Did you know that the Burlingame Railroad Station AS WELL AS the Menlo Park Railroad Station ARE Historic Landmarks within these United States!

NO. 846 BURLINGAME RAILROAD STATION - This first permanent building in the Mission Revival style of architecture opened for service on October 10, 1894. Designed by George H. Howard and J.B. Mathison, it was financed by local residents and the Southern Pacific Railroad. The roof used 18th-century tiles from the Mission San Antonio de Padua at Jolon and the Mission Dolores Asistencia at San Mateo.

NO. 955 MENLO PARK RAILROAD STATION - This building, constructed in 1867 by the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad Company, is the oldest railroad passenger station in California. The Victorian ornamentation was added in the 1890s when the station was remodeled to serve the newly-opened Stanford University. The extension on the northwest was added to accommodate increased traffic generated by the establishment of Camp Fremont nearby during World War I.

Add one Santa Clara County railroad depot to the list of historic stations.

The Santa Clara station, built in 1863, is actually the oldest depot in California.

Santa Clara, however, is a combined passenger and freight depot. That distinction allows Menlo Park to claim the title as the oldest passenger-only depot in the state.

Menlo Park's freight station, the formerly green Railway Express Agency building, is currently located just north of Ravenswood Avenue. It is home to the West Bay Model Railroad club. Until about 20 years ago the building was located at the foot of Santa Cruz Avenue. It was relocated as part of an upgrade project of the station.

I'm not sure what year the freight depot was built, but it was around in World War I to handle dead soldiers when the U.S. Army's Camp Fremont was located in Menlo Park.

The model railroad club is open to the public from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the third Friday and fourth Wednesday of each month. In addition, the club hosts an open house on one weekend (Friday night and then all-day Saturday and Sunday) in December. I'n not sure which weekend the open house will be on this year, but it should be coming up pretty soon.

Please remember to add poor old "El Palo Alto" the famous historic 2,000 year old redwood tree to any list of things historic. The original railroad builders proudly accomodated it when the first track was laid. A picnic site for Portola.

Two thousand is bit high.

A 1955 analysis of tree rings taken from a boring of the tree found it to be 1,015-years-old. That was 55 years ago, making the tree 1,070-years-old today.
