High Speed Rail project must start in the Central Valley

At the meeting today of the High Speed Rail Authority, van Ark, announced that the Federal Rail Administration had sent them a letter stating that all funds allotted to California, including the ARRA funds previously announced, must be spent on construction in the Central Valley.

Thus any further uncertainty that the project might start here in the Bay area, or in So. California has now been completely eliminated.

van Ark says they have $4.33 billion to build either the Merced to Fresno section, or the Fresno to Bakersfield section.

It was an interesting day, with the hearing in the Senate Transportation and Housing committee also taking place and Simitian and Lowenthal really let the Authority have it with both barrels. Both Senators very unhappy with broken promises and serious questions about the ridership study.

Today's Daily News reported that likely new House Transp. Chair Mica (R-Fla) would likely only support High Speed Rail funding in highly urbanized areas where it made sense, i.e. Northeast Corridor.
Don't be surprised if Fed funding evaporates with Pelosi's dethroning , HSRA ceases to exist, NO Central Valley section gets "Shovel Ready" Fed bucks, and Van Ark catches the first plane out of Sacto.
