Why The Almanac Matters

Original post made by Ed, Atherton: other, on Aug 24, 2010

Not listed here on line, but contained on page 6 of todays Almanac print edition is an article about the status of Atherton's road impact fee litigation and the latest of several lawsuits brought by resident/developer P.P.G./Steve Ackly against the town.
The article states that at last Wed. council meeting Charles Marsala quickly recused himself from the council vote on this item and ran out of the room with out explanation.
While am pleased to see that council members with a conflict of interest are finally stepping aside to avoid endless ethics hearings-I am left with the following questions.
1) What exactly is Mr. Marsala's connection/conflict of interest with P.P.G.? Is it a financial relationship of some kind? Is it something recent or ongoing as has always seemed apparent?
and 2)
Why didn't Ms. Lewis offer to recuse herself as well, from voting on this same issue since her relationship to P.P.G. has been so recently well established by the town attorney's examination of the zoning violations on her property-built by P.P.G.

Also-I am curios to Know how we can ever learn the answer to these or any other questions the public might have of its leadership, if the city attorney is advising council members NOT to respond to public comment, as Ms Furth did at the last meeting on the subject of campaign financial disclosure.
Are we really expected to ask the city manager to address our concerns (see utubevidioMacgruber)??
Will the press at least, be allowed to expect answers on the public's behalf or has the peoples business become "nobody's business"?

Easy answer........
There are more than a few people who have something to hide.
Also, they might be online trying to figure how to get uninvolved with the others who have left meetings in session, decided not to go for re-election, and almost every Supervisor has been very mum for a reason.
Why not just ask yourself if this county is not on the up and up?
The foibles of being an honest person who happens to live in the richest counties in the country, with the best paid attorneys and a lot of people who have lost out on account of improprieties ranging from small values, to hundred million dollar losses as a result of a lot of greed and corruption.
I am sure Mr.Marsala regrets that dramatic exit from that meeting which has haunted him to this day.
OR, law firms closing.Like the Greek Civilization, our county may have some of the most creative talent in the world, but we tend not to function as a WHOLE because there is not a central focus for all of us who feel somehow "special" in the Bay Area and BEYOND...like Sparta,Athens,Troy...we relate all as they did..without the thinkers.
Weekly lawsuits are almost a joke in all cities of the COUNTY and the results with most of them, are even sillier.
The RICH, HONEST,ENTREPRENERIAL people will survive. Most of THEM work hard, and beyond the confines of the P.P.G. and care about the future of the U.S. and even the world.

I meant to add that we all know what happened to the Greek Civilization as a result.

Here is what the law REQUIRES:

"Public officials specified in section 87200 of the Government Code, such as council members, planning commissioners, and boards of supervisors, must publicly identify in detail the economic interest that creates the conflict, step down from the dais and must then leave the room. This identification must be following the announcement of the agenda item to be discussed or voted upon, but before either the discussion or vote commences."

THEMISTOCLES. That who is needed.
Unfortunately, our problems involve just ourselves and we need no triremes to win this war.
I think the allusions to Greece is perfect.
Humans are failing in every form of government and we have no HEROES.

Maybe Ackley was the hard money lender Marsala was looking for.

Next time I am in town I'll stop by the County Recorder.

Mr. Marsala's explanation is that he recused himself for personal reasons, and needs never get to the financial disclosure part because the recusal was for personal reasons instead of financial reasons. Of course, a personal recusal would involve abstaining from the vote, not walking out of the room. Furth is protecting Marsala again, who clearly has some sort of financial deal with PPG/Steve Ackley. This is horrible and reprehensible.

Between this latest coverup by Furth, and the video script she wrote for Gruber, WHY IS SHE STILL HERE???

WHY IS SHE STILL HERE???

Because she is protecting a majority of the council. Quid pro quo, they won't fire her.

Why would it be so wrong for Marsala to have worked out a deal with P.P.G. to accept money from the refund of fees as repayment for all his loyal support? We all know by now that he needed to get money from somewhere after all, or risk losing his house. Why would the residents of this town mind paying for Charles' home with public funds after everything he has done for this community?
Think about it!
The city manager gets a free house and he has been worth far less to us! And Elizabeth made her own creative arrangements for a housing perk package with P.P.G..
This is a win win for almost everyone.

For those people reading this thread who agree with GoodQuestion that this "stinks," you should (1) cast your vote in November for the appropriate candidates, not the most recognizable names, and (2) tell your friends and neighbors what's going on so they can vote appropriately, also.

Not so difficult to do...

That is really a panacea for everything POGO...
I don't trust anyone and know less about the newbies........
This is just a mismanaged and competitive string of losers who are falling like dominoes.
There is no structure when everything starts at city hall...in this case, the seat of govt for San Mateo County and all the department heads who have been around for the halcion days of money making when the banks made everyone think their shed didn't smell.
