OK, let's charge a high rent. Operating costs go into determining the fee. The fee for use goes up, participation goes down. Participation goes down, programs and hours are cut back. There is a budget deficit. No money therefore no swim and sport program.
Actually, this scenario sounds parallel to Caltrain's woes of raising rates, cutting service and not responding to reasonable requests from the dedicated ridership.
Yes, bond money went into building the pool for the benefit of the citizens. But a low utilization and near empty facility will not fill the coffers of the city.
Please be reasonable in this bidding process. We have a highly successful and well utilized program. The numbers of participants attest to the success of the current program management.

Yea, try $7 mil there, Rokky. Where else you gonna get to run a $7 million facility rent-free? Only under the previous libertarian city council regime.

Before the pool was built!!!! MENLO MASTERS members offered to pay for the Burgess pool for free--a large fund raising drive collected seven or eight hundred of thousand in under three weeks (this was back when everyone had money)--this gift was too scary for Menlo Park to accept "from a cult" so they did it their own way and then found themselves stuck and unable to complete their goals for the pool.

I watched the City Council mmeting last night and observed the genius Kelly Fergusson refer to the RFQ as a Request for Qualification. Her knowledge of the proposal process never ceases to amaze me. I had a good chuckle over that one. Perhaps if we issued Kelly's version of RFQs to her Rich and Heyward the voters would not have qualified them to run.
