The Z Prize

Original post made by Peter Carpenter, Atherton: Lindenwood, on Aug 14, 2010

The California HSR Authority has budgeted $5 BILLION dollars for the San Jose - San Francisco segment.

My challenge to the Forum readers is to propose the best way to utilize up to $5 Billion dollars to connect an HSR terminus in San Jose to the HSR terminus in San Francisco. Entrants are not limited to any particular mode of transportation or routing. Criteria for awarding the Z Prize include efficiency of operation, cost of construction, impact on the communities through which your routing goes, and aesthetics of the completed project.

My award to the winner will be dinner for two at the Peninsula restaurant of your choice. Other interested individuals are invited to join me in expanding the award criteria, selecting the winner and adding to the winner's prize.

OK Peninsula innovators - let's think outside the box.

Don't they have to redo the old Hetch Hetchy water system across the Bay anyway?
Across and under the old Dumbarton train trellis?
Why don't they just put a rail connector between the dead end S.F. cul de sac, and the east bay high speed rail corridor, right back on top of the new water pipe?
Two birds with one stone.

The ne water pipe will be in a new tunnel beneath the Bay.

How about $1 million to get you to shut up already, Peter?
