Wasmann's Worries

Original post made by bill everett, Atherton: other, on Jul 29, 2010

Atherton Building Official Mike Wasmann is under fire.

Not only has one resident questioned his credentials, resulting in a front page article on the daily post, a former Town employee has alleged that Wasmann has endangered the health and safety of Atherton residents by ignoring the Atherton building code while performing building inspections.

It is my belief that Mr. Wasmann is not qualified as a Building Inspector, much less a Building Official. He is not certified as a Building Official. And until I brought it to the Town's attention, he had even let his certification as a Building Inspector lapse in 2007. I have a copy of his resume. It appears he has a maximum of two school years at College of San Mateo. It is unclear whether any degree was granted. He claims to have taken various additional classes in the Uniform Building Code. I am still investigating. And his only employment in the construction industry was self-employment, where we do not know the number, size or complexity of the projects he built, much less their quality. And there is no experienced outside oversight in self-employment.

In my opinion, this background is totally inadequate for employment as a Building Inspector, much less Building Official, for the homes being built in the Town of Atherton, with their complex size and designs. I have called for Mr. Wasmann's firing. I have been ignored.

Mike Wasmann was hired to clean up the Building Department.

One of his first acts was to tell my former colleague and friend that he should go look for another job.

The individual whom I am referring to was a contract plan checker. He was a very good one. Too good in fact. My former colleague and friend prefers that I not mention him by name. He remains afraid of the rich and powerful whom we offended by our audit of the Building Department.

Mike Wasmann has been a bitter disappointment. He has created the appearance of a tight ship. However this is a mere illusion.
