In February, 2010, Mr. Gruber, along with Jerry Carlson and Charles Marsala flew down to Carlsbad California to attend the League of California Cities Conference.
Instead of selecting a budget hotel with a nightly rate of $100 to $150 per night such as a La Quinta, Quality Inn or Homewood Suites Mr. Gruber chose to stay at the La Costa Resort and Spa, a four star hotel with a nightly rate of $258, for this three day conference.
This raises an interesting question: Is it essential that public employees who travel at taxpayers expense stay in luxury hotels while travelling on Town business?
Another question worth asking is as the financial condition of Atherton and other California cities deteriorate, shouldn't we expect our public employees to sacrifice just a little?
Finally one may want to ask, where did Jerry Gruber and Charles Marsala stay? Did they live it up at a resort as well? Did they pay for the hotel or did the taxpayers?
