The "downtown" visioning plan, i.e., the area bounded by El Camino, University Drive, Menlo Avenue and Oak Grove Avenue is dead on arrival. The majority of residents agree with the opposition of those downtown property owners who oppose converting Menlo Park into a mini-San Mateo, Redwood City or Palo Alto. We are more akin to Los Altos and Los Gatos, and the planners should have had sense enough to respect this.
Whether the plan for the area along El Camino will fare any better will depend on whether planners will recede on height limits so that El Camino avoids becoming a "grand canyon" like parts of Redwood City and also on providing convenient pedestrian crossings over or under El Camino. Four stories should be the absolute max with ceilings of 3 stories and extra set backs for variety. Develomaniacs like Sam Sinnott are concerned only with the money they can make and not with the livability of Menlo Park.
