Major traffic danger at 1906 El Camino site

Original post made by Bob, Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park, on Jun 14, 2010

Consider this an open letter to Phil Giurlani, one of the developers or persons involved with the ownership of the 1906 El Camino site and the Menlo Park City Council, Police Dept, Engineering, Public Works and City Manager.

Due to the cyclone fence alongside El Camino your 1906 work-site is a major Watkins/El Camino accident waiting to happen.

Please move the fence back to the bldg. It is impossible to safely exit Watkins onto El Camino as the northbound El Camino traffic is hidden by the fence until it is on top of Watkins. Additionally, why isn't there a protected sidewalk area for pedestrians during your construction.

I assume that any personal injury attorney worth her/his salt could make an excellent case that any accident liability involving visibility is the liability of your firm. Please note that a recent accident involving a construction delineation object in Menlo Park resulted in a $2.4 million payment by the construction company to the victim's family www.almanacnews.com/news/show_story.php?id=6824. And the City of Menlo Park was also held responsible

In other words please resolve the hazardous situation before someone is injured or worse! So let's get our heads out our behinds and do something right.

The developers have no excuse not to move the fence.

The city should ensure there is a safe way for pedestrians to get around that corner even if it's a temporary barrier if the fence itself is not moved. Now.

This project and this corner are an example of what should NOT happen in future development. The upcoming El Camino and downtown plans should make sure that it doesn't. The building is too close to the streets, not set back enough. The corner is sloped to make it easier for wheelchairs, baby carriages, and the disabled to get on/off the sidewalk from/to the street. However, there isn't much level sidewalk at the corner for those same types of people already on the sidewalk to easily navigate the turn. This is a ridiculous design for a sidewalk, and for the building front to El Camino.
