Students, parents rally against 'hate' group

Original post made on Jan 29, 2010

More than 250 people gathered at the Gunn High School campus in Palo Alto this morning (Jan. 29) in opposition to five demonstrators from the Westboro Baptist Church -- a controversial organization from Topeka, Kansas -- who were conducting a protest across from the school on Arastradero Road. ==B Photo:== Menlo-Atherton students Stefanie Pressesky (center) and Nicole Barnes argue with protestors. ==I Photo by Michelle Le/Palo Alto Online.==

Mr. Sanchez.........a lousy bit of reporting on your part.
Why did you not specify what the protesting was about in greater length? [Portion removed] Is the protesting about the suicide?
All you mention is how happy people were that it went so well, and that "they've been lied to and are jumping in front of trains".WHY?
NON VIOLENCE.......why should there be violence?
The very sound of the word BAPTIST denotes all kinds of negativity in these parts of liberal young people.
"Just a lot of singing, and a lot of signs" AND A LOT OF SODA DOWN YOUR PANTS.

The nutjobs at Westboro Baptist are as virulent a bunch of racist, homophobic haters as one can imagine. I'm not sure I can even post any of their Web site domain names on this forum, they're so offensive. According to these fine, God-fearing people, Gunn students are throwing themselves in front of trains because their parents taught them that it's OK to be gay.

These are the same charmers who picket at the funerals of soldiers who are killed in action, rejoicing in the deaths and praying for more.

Personally, I don't like the idea of rewarding them with attention. Don't counter-protest, just ignore them.
