Avoiding strange symbols in Town Square posts

Original post made by Richard Hine, editor of The Almanac, on Jan 5, 2010

You may have noticed strange symbols in some Town Square posts. The symbols occur where apostrophes and quote marks should be (example below). This happens when you paste text from a Word document with "Smart Quotes" turned on.

To turn off Smart Quotes, do this in a Word document:
-- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
-- Uncheck the box with the option to replace "Straight Quotes" with "Smart Quotes."

EXAMPLE OF SYMBOLS
Im pleased with some of the efforts to make our planet Earth, our country, our state, our counties and our cities more green.

to avoid strange opinions you need to turn off stupid quotes in addition to smart quotes.
