Money woes threaten Atherton post office

Original post made on Dec 30, 2009

During the busy holiday season, Atherton's little branch post office is a savvy mailer's best-kept secret. Located in the town's administrative offices building on Ashfield Road, it attracts people who want to avoid the interminably long lines found at most post offices in December and who don't mind paying in cash.

I have made two sugggestions to improve cash flow in the Atherton Post Office:

1. Accept Credit Cards: Whenever I need to purchase stamps or pay postage at the counter I go to Menlo Park to charge it and create a receipt.

2. Add mail boxes: First proposed as part of the new Town Center, but it could be done sooner. Besides rental income, this would encourage businesses to register in Atherton and Atherton could collect Sales Tax Revenue. There could be several home based businesses not wanting to receive mail at the home so it goes to mail boxes in other cities.

3. Something new to consider: Is it worth it to sell other supplies often purchased at the Menlo Post office to increase revenue at the Atherton Post Office?

Anybody who looks closely at the financial statements just released will see that the Town has $19 million in the bank.

The simple truth is that the Town could afford to keep the post office open even if it didn't get a dime from the US Postal Service.

Come on guys we just authorized you to collect another $2 million a year in special taxes. To say you have to sell gummy bears along with stamps or to rent PO boxes to make ends meet is ridiculous.
