Arnie Duncan on California's education system

Original post made by Joe, Menlo Park: Allied Arts/Stanford Park, on Nov 3, 2009

According to a report from the nonprofit EdSource, Education Secretary Arnie Duncan, in talking in June about $4 billion in competitive grants in the new Race to the Top program, had this to say about the prospect of California winning any of this money:

The state had “lost its way” as a leader in public education, and he issued a challenge: “Your state once had the best education system in the country. From cradle to career, you took care of your children. You made sure they were ready to enter your universities or be productive participants in the workforce. I ask you, is California going to lead the race to the top or are you going to lead the retreat?”

The California Teachers Association and some Democratic legislators are opposed to at least some of Race to the Top's provisions, according to former Mercury News reporter John Fensterwald at his blog "Educated Guess."
