M-A Freshmen Win Bronze Medal at U.S. Interscholastic Championship in Orienteering

During the 2008/9 season the Menlo-Atherton High School team beat last year’s champion Monta Vista High School from Cupertino and won the Bay Area Interscholastic Championship in Orienteering.

Last weekend 62 teams from around the country participated in the U.S. Interscholastic Championship in Orienteering, which took place in West Point, NY.

Philipp Kopisch and Daniel Kopisch, freshmen from M-A competed with 505 participants from April 17-19. Their Varsity team finished in third place, so that Philipp and Daniel returned with bronze medals from West Point.

In orienteering, "the thinking sport", you use a map and compass to navigate a course through unfamiliar terrain. This can be done as a competitive cross-country race or as a leisurely walk in the woods. People of all ages enjoy orienteering either as individuals or as a family or group going out on the course together.
