City finances: How deep will cuts go?

The high drama that's been unfolding in the Menlo Park council chambers in recent weeks might not provide fodder for playwrights and novelists, but it should be compelling viewing for council watchers. At its roots: budget discussions.
Always laborious, the budgeting process looks to be more contentious than usual this year, with council members split on how to approach the city's finances in the midst of a recession.

I certainly agree with Judge Cohen. The City manager seems to have his head in the sand, and is doing everything to keep his staff happy.

Private enterprise is cutting left and right and government needs to do the same. How much of the City's general fund reserve are they going to eat up -- I certainly don't support in these tough times any kind of tax increase. Look at what has already happened at the State level.

It time to reduce staff, get concessions from the staff and get lean and mean.
