A mountain lion is believed to have attacked a dog in Woodside on March 17 at around 9:45 p.m., according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. Contrary to previous information released by the county, the dog survived.

A resident who lives near Raymundo and Marva Oaks drives, drove onto her lawn and honked at the mountain lion to scare it off after hearing a commotion, said Rosemerry Blankswade, the Sheriff's public information officer in a video.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to make a full recovery from the injuries, she said.

The Mountain lion had to climb a 6 foot deer fence to get onto the property, the owner told the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies couldn't find the mountain lion, according to a press release.

The Sheriff's Office notified the Fish and Wildlife warden of the suspected attack. Deputies will conduct additional passing checks of the area.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife last estimated in 1996 that there were between 4,000 and 6,000 mountain lions in the state. In 2014, the department began to update that estimate and anticipates completing the effort within a few years.

Mountain lion attacks on people are rare. There have only been 18 verified incidents since 1986, according to the state.

"Statistically speaking, a person is 1,000 times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a mountain lion," according to the Fish and Wildlife Department.

The Sheriff's Office said they believe this was an isolated incident.
