Two local schools named winners of their spelling bee competitions this month.
Encinal School declared fifth grader Riaan Shetty its 2020 spelling bee winner, according to a news release from the Atherton school, a part of the Menlo Park City School District.
Fifth grader Marissa Hou and fourth grader Kian Kourtidis were the runners-up. Fifteen students participated in the event, which lasted 37 rounds. Riaan's final championship word was kaleidoscope.
"This was a momentous event for Encinal as we have never gone through more than 16 rounds!" according to the release.
La Entrada School named eighth grader Nikhil Chopra as its spelling bee winner. According to a press release from the Menlo Park middle school, which is part of the Las Lomitas School District, after 13 rounds of competition, Nikhil won by correctly spelling the word arugula.
Nikhil faced seventh grader Celine Chien in three championship rounds, featuring words such as manganese and connecticuter.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will have a list of the spellers who will advance to the Bay Area Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 10, said Valerie Miller, communications manager and media liaison for Scripps.
Winners of local schools' spelling bees take an online test, and those with the top scores advance to the oral spelling competition on Feb. 29, Miller said. Winners of the regional spelling bee advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
