Is Trump coming to Atherton?

Politico says presidential fundraising event may take place in town, though officials can't confirm

Atherton may be the destination of President Donald Trump's Bay Area political fundraising visit on Sept. 17, Politico reported on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Almanac contacted town officials on Friday, Aug. 30, to see if any special events permit had been taken out for a presidential visit after Trump posted on his website that he would be in the Bay Area for a fundraiser in September. (The town revised its special events permit process in 2015 so that hosts are billed by the town for the costs of special services that police or other town departments provide.) City Manager George Rodericks responded that no permits for a fundraiser have been taken out, but said a permit for such an event is sometimes taken out only days before.

"We heard the same 'rumor' – we are attempting to confirm with the Secret Service. But, as you know, the PD (police department) cannot release addresses advised to them by the Secret Service," Rodericks said in a Sept. 3 email. "However, all property owners hosting large events are required to obtain a special event permit. This would be no different. Those permits are public record. They do not have to advise who they are hosting."

The permit application stipulates that permit applications, which come with a $75 fee and ask for details, such as if the event hosts will need traffic control help, street barricades or other town services, should be taken out 60 days before an event.

Rodericks said there are no penalties for turning in a permit fewer than 60 days in advance, and it's rare that the town receives notice that far ahead of time. The notice is largely treated as advisory, as the permit may trigger special conditions (fire and building inspections for tents, neighborhood noticing, etc.) that cannot be met within the time frame, he said.

"Repercussions for not taking out a permit are only incurred if the Police have to respond to an event that did not take out a permit and should have," he said. "They could be held liable for the cost of response."

A 2016 visit by Hillary Clinton for a campaign fundraiser attended by about 400 people did not require any more than the usual police services from the Atherton Police Department during the hour-and-a-half-long visit because the Secret Service and California Highway Patrol were on hand, Rodericks said in 2016.

Two other high-profile events in Atherton in 2016 did result in bills to the hosts, Rodericks said. A Super Bowl charity fundraiser at the home of Jillian Manus resulted in a bill of $3,720.25, he said. A fundraising visit by President Barack Obama included $4,563 in police services and about $1,500 in public works services.

Last week, Trump announced that he would host a fundraiser in the Bay Area for his 2020 reelection bid, but didn't provide a specific location for the event.

Tickets cost from $1,000 to $100,000 for a couple to dine with Trump, according to a "save the date" invitation obtained by Politico.

This is a great opportunity for the President to meet with regular American voters. Does he care about regular Americans or only the billionaires who think they can buy influence?

In any case, plenty of regular folk across the freeway, in Belle Haven and East Palo Alto. I'm sure he'd get plenty of informative feedback if he came here, and let a representative group of people speak their mind.

Absolutely, he will hold a rally and speak to the common man. Not like the President is a coastal elite or something. He knows how important California is to the nation, and his political party.

Let's look at comments about his previous visit:

"You are NOT wanted here. what a waste of time, ENERGY, money, global warming effects--trooping your jet, entourage, luggage, security, huge cars (gas guzzlers), long delays--cars idling while waiting in traffic for your parade on nonsense. Do us all a favor--just send your money--YOU ARE NOT WANTED!!"

Oh, wait, that was for the brown guy. IOKIYAR, I guess. Shall we look at the quotes about that President's occasional round of golf? We had lots of time this weekend while the current occupant sent Pence off to Poland and played multiple rounds while the South-East prepared for a Cat 5.

regardless of politics, this is The President of the United States. Children should be allowed to see the motorcade in awe, and just enjoy being an American for a day.

@voter - has any President cared about the common man vs his billionaire friends and influencers? And, since this is most likely a campaign fund stop, then, absolutely they only care about the rich guys.

anyway, hope it doesnt impact traffic too much.

((oh, or is he building a new Trump Tower? Seems like something the MP City Council would be behind ))

Obviously Trump is seeing an attitude change in CA. or he wouldn’t waste his time coming. CA is rapidly becoming a high disaster but those living in this Bay Area bubble don’t seem to see what’s going on. It was not Billionaires who elected trump and the ranks of the ‘deplorables’ is growing rapidly, just not obvious to the elites.

Oh to be sure, the republicans in Atherton are part of the "elites"

He's coming here to get money from the elites.
Also, his approval rating is at an all time low with rank and file non-elitist Republicans.
The farmers have lost hope after he turned them into socialist takers.
So sad.

whaaaa?!? Trump LOST the most traditionally republican part of our state last year - Orange County, the bedrock of CA republicans. Dems SWEPT the GOP out of Orange County. Dems swept the floor with republicans all over the state last year. "An attitude change"? Maybe in your flavor of koolaid.

...

> has any President cared about the common man vs his billionaire friends and influencers?

Of course there have. Just not a republican.

How quickly we forget about FDR and the New Deal, pulling America out of the First Republican Great Depression. What about Johnson's Great Society: Medicare (denounced by Reagan as socialism Web Link ) and Civil Rights.

Republicans just run up the deficit with corporate welfare and giveaways to billionaires (Trump's trillion dollar deficits and giveaways to corporations, himself, and billionaires, for example.)

Can't wait. Hopefully he will continue to do it during his second term. The Obama's came to the money well often. We had to deal with Obama and Clinton roaming around town begging for money; we are use to it. We will survive; it will be fine. From some of the posts its sounds like there are a lot of people that want to see him and show support.

I love how "Atherton," the most expensive zip-code in the US, is some proxy for "regular American voters." Seriously out of touch. I often walk from MP to RWC and really like the hostilepitality the town shows with its lack of street lights and sidewalks that most Americans take for granted. DT should feel right at home vacuuming the money out that place.

What’s wrong with taking money from Billionaires? Don’t all politicians do just that ? Hillary came, Obama came, why not Trump? Actually in the last Election he spent a lot of his own money and will again, being POToUS is actually costing him money, not that anyone in this bubble will believe that even though it’s true.
Just like in the last Elections everyone was shocked when he WON, they will be more shocked when he wins again, by an even larger vote. Who will we blame the next time since blaming Russia didn’t go anywhere. Just face it he is the first President in a long time to actually TRY to keep some promises, even in the face of severe opposition. He is definitely a man of the people.

He passed one law - a tax cut for himself, billionaires and corporations, which is putting the deficit back over a trillion.

What promises kept? Mexico paid for a wall?

Jobs? his monthly job growth is just a continuation of The Obama Recovery from the Busg Great Recession Web Link

All the best people? Look how many guilty pleas and indictments. Terrible.

He can't negotiate his way out of a paper bag - that's why his lawyers always kept him away until the deal was done (see the books.) Look at what his stupid tariffs are costing American working families and farmers.

The Korean dictator makes him pay for meetings and laughs about his short fingers.

But he "tries".

I’ll sign off after this comment entry. Nov.3, 2020 what will you all say when he wins, BIG. Believe the polls all you want, they were wrong last time and they will be wrong again. As to Iokiyar comment about China, why did former Presidents let that trade deal get so bad ?? I’m willing to suffer some now, if necessary, to get it fixed as are most of my friends in Iowa, my home State , although I’ve been in Menlo Park nearly 50 years now. What hurts me is when my ‘smart’ neighbors keep voting for more taxes to cure transportation and education ills when the money raised only goes to pay pensions for over paid government employees. I’ll take Trump any day. Yes the deficit is going up, I hope in the second term he can regain control of Congress and fix that but it’s not like it didn’t go up a trillion a year under Obama who like the rest said nice things, did nothing.

It went up when the GOP had control of both houses. Hope and pray all you want, but only a Democrat will get in down under a trillion, and by repealing the corporate tax cuts.

> but it’s not like it didn’t go up a trillion a year under Obama

It didn't. Bush took Clinton's surplus, and ran our first trillion dollar deficit. Obama inherited bush's trillion dollar deficit and cut it by 2/3rds over 8 years.

Look at any chart.

Republicans destroy deficits and even admit it. Dick Cheney: "Reagan taught us deficits don't matter"

Yes, you are one of the MP 13% that voted for Trump. Enjoy.

You are egregiously misinformed.

Republican Reagan: budget deficit went UP.
Republican Bush: budget deficit went UP.
Democrat Clinton: budget deficit went DOWN.
Republican Bush: budget deficit went UP.
Democrat Obama: budget deficit went DOWN.
Republican Trump: budget deficit went UP.

"Republicans are more fiscally responsible" is one of the bigger lies foised on the American public.

"Deficits don't matter" has been repeatedly stated by REPUBLICANS.

"All this talk about concern for the deficit and the budget has been bogus for as long as it's been around." was said by RUSH LIMBAUGH just a couple months ago.

Try educating yourself sometime. You'll be better for it.

That's what I thought. You're completely devoid of any objectivity or critical thinking, and merely take Trump at his word. This issue would be answerable if Trump had kept his promise to make his taxes public, but of course he lied about that too.

I think it is great that we have residents that are involved with this country from both sides of the aisle.
