A 21-year-old Menlo Park man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and his 7-year-old sibling was taken to a local hospital following a crash in Atherton on Thursday, Aug. 29, according to an Aug. 30 Atherton Police Department press release.
Around 2:54 p.m. on Thursday, the man drove a gray Honda Odyssey into a speed limit pole and an oak tree on the northbound shoulder of Middlefield Road, just north of Surrey Lane. Police said the man was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Emergency personnel took the child, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Redwood City, police said.
The child was not in the proper safety restraint system at the time of the crash, police said. (California law requires that all children under the age of 8 and under 4 feet, 9 inches tall must be secured in a federally approved car seat or booster seat.)
The man was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on charges of DUI with injury and child endangerment, according to police.
Editor's note: It is The Almanac's policy to withhold the names of those arrested for most crimes until the District Attorney's Office has determined that there is sufficient evidence to file charges in the case.

Alcohol and cars are killing us almost daily but we gripe loudest about bikes and cannabis.
