With two Portola Valley School District board members' terms expiring in December, the board voted 4-0 at a June 5 meeting, with Trustee Gulliver La Valle absent, to authorize an election for the seats on the November ballot, according to the district.

La Valle, who joined the board in 2015, will not seek re-election, he said in an email.

"I'm actually just feeling fulfilled to have been a part of the board for 4 years and ready to let someone else take the torch!" La Valle wrote.

Trustee Brooke Day, who joined the board in 2017, could not be reached for comment on whether she will seek another term.

In order to comply with a recent state law that requires elections for most board and council seats to take place in even years, the two board positions filled in November will be for three-year terms, rather than the typical four-year terms. Eventually, all five board positions will return to four-year terms.

The board must deliver an approved resolution to the San Mateo County Office of Education and the county chief elections officer by July 5 to qualify for the ballot, according to a district staff report.

The board appointed Kimberley Morris Rosen in March to replace Michael Maffia, who resigned earlier that month. Morris Rosen will stay on until Maffia's term ends in December 2020.

The candidate filing period for the November election will open July 15 and close Aug. 9.
