Atherton council members chose Bill Widmer to be the new mayor for 2019 and Rick DeGolia to serve as vice mayor at a Dec. 6 meeting.
Widmer joined the City Council in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014. He was previously named mayor in late 2011 and has also served as vice mayor twice.
"Over the past years, we have been blessed to have a collaborative and responsive council and have had great mayors leading our meetings and maintaining a productive environment as we addressed many important decisions," Widmer said at the Dec. 6 council meeting. "I am looking forward to continuing in their manner as I serve my second term in this role."
DeGolia joined the council in 2013. His term also ends in 2022.
Cary Wiest, Atherton’s mayor this year, nominated Widmer for mayor and DeGolia for vice mayor. The votes for both were unanimous.
The council officially canceled its November election in August by appointing the three incumbents, who were the only candidates to file for the three open seats, to serve new four-year terms. Council members voted unanimously to appoint DeGolia, Mike Lempres and Widmer to new terms that started in December.
