San Mateo County Sheriff's detectives have arrested a La Honda man and Stanford University employee for allegedly molesting several children over the course of five years.
William Jenkins, 60, was arrested on December 22 at his home on Sueno Camino in La Honda and faces at least 72 counts of child molestation, said Det. Chuck Carr of the Sheriff's Office.
Mr. Jenkins, who works as a technician in the facilities operations department at Stanford University, pled not guilty on January 5 and is being held on a $2 million bail.
Sheriff's detectives learned about the case from one of Mr. Jenkins' neighbors, who did not want to be identified. She contacted the police after her children revealed last November that Mr. Jenkins allegedly molested them.
An investigation, including interviews with several children, ultimately led to Mr. Jenkins' arrest a few days before Christmas.
"It's one of those cases that pop up these days from allegations of very old events," said Mr. Jenkins' attorney William Daley. "They are difficult to investigate and deal with."
Mr. Daley said his law firm, Santa Monica-based Miller & Associates, is conducting its own investigation.
Deputy District Attorney Rick Good declined to divulge additional information on the case. But the neighbor who first notified the police said Mr. Jenkins rented out the top floor of his home to a family with two children and allegedly met other children through them.
A date for a preliminary hearing will be set on January 27.
